Our Church
Toronto Chinese Methodist Church is a Christian church of the
Wesleyan tradition, rooted in the love of Jesus Christ, with the
emphasis on building a loving church, leading people to have peace
with God and have the experience of an abundant life. The origin
of the church can be traced back to the 1970s, when a substantial
number of brothers and sisters from the Methodist Church in Hong
Kong emigrated to Toronto. They came with the expectation to search
for a church where they can worship and serve God. At that time,
there was not even one Chinese Methodist Church in Canada. Thus,
the dream for a Methodist Church in Toronto was gradually formed
in their hearts. With the growing of the Chinese population, the
urge of establishing a Methodist Church was firm and strong. In
1977, the Wesley Fellowship was founded. The brothers and sisters
later saw the need of ministering to the visa students from Hong
Kong, thus in 1982, the Wesley Education Services (Toronto) was
established. This was the beginning of the student ministry and
also the pastoral ministry to the Methodist members from Hong
Kong.
In the early years, TCMC used the facilities of the Tri-Congregational
Churches in North York and the first worship service was held
on September 11, 1983. In 1985, the church property at Logan Avenue
was purchased. In June 1992, a daughter church was planted in
Markham, using the facilities of the Milliken Wesleyan Methodist
Church. In August 1998, the land at Warden Avenue and Hwy.401
was purchased for the construction of a new building, for worship
and for the sharing of the good news. With the providence of God,
the new building was finished in the summer of 2001. TCMC continues
to share the good news with Cantonese, Mandarin and English Communities
and to serve the people in the Greater Toronto area.
TCMC has meetings for people of all ages and we welcome friends
to join us.
